FLEGT-VPA: 90% of stakeholders are not aware the process in Province Orientale, DR Congo

Less than 10% of the actors involved in the forestry sector have knowledge about the FLEGT-VPA negotiating process between DR Congo and the European Union, while 90% said they have no information about the process. This is the main result of an investigation conducted by TBI DR Congo in June 2014 in the Province Orientale, DR Congo.

Stakeholders undertake to promote legal timber in Province Orientale, DR Congo

City dwellers’ rush for rural lands threatens the implementation of community forestry

City dwellers’ investment in rural areas could be an opportunity for the development of these areas, but at the same time is a threat to development as it drastically reduces customary forests for local communities. Therefore, community forestry is at risk: if nothing is done to stop this trend, in the near future there will be no forests for local people and, therefore no community forestry. This is the main message of TBI DR Congo at the 7th forum on forest governance in Africa, held in Kinshasa, DR Congo from 29 to 30 September 2013 and organized by The IDLgroup in collaboration with TBI DR Congo.

Community Forestry: an opportunity to reduce poverty and ensure sustainable management of forests in DR Congo

Community forestry can be an opportunity to improve the socioeconomic conditions of local communities and ensure sustainable forest management, if it is based on the principles of good governance, according to Professor Alphonse Maindo, director of Tropenbos International DR Congo program.
